Preparing Your Roof for Winter

It’s always important to inspect your roof as the seasons change, and winter is no exception. To make sure that your roof is in suitable condition for the heavy snowfall arriving soon, here are six things you need to do to prepare your roof.

Take a Walk

Only do this step if you’re comfortable walking across your rooftop. If not, then ask a neighbour who is or call a professional roofer. It’s important to inspect your roof for any missing shingles, roof damage and other issues that can lead to leaking or further damage to your home. This can only be done properly by looking closely at the surface of the roof. By walking across your roof, you also have the opportunity to clear away any debris or branches that may clog your gutters.

Clean the Gutters

While it’s not a fun task, cleaning your gutters is a necessary chore in keeping water and moisture under control and away from the structure of your home. Having clogged gutters, especially during the winter, can cause a problem when it comes to melting and freezing snow. Before the first snowfall, it’s important to clear out all debris from the gutters, including leaves, twigs and shingle granules, which can indicate that you need a new roof altogether. While this usually gets done only once a year, if your home is surrounded by mature trees, you’ll have to clean your gutters several times during the autumn months.

Inspect the Attic

You can tell a lot about the integrity of your roofing system by taking a look at your attic. If you notice any water staining on the beams, then your roof has been leaking and it’s time for you to call someone in before the issue gets worse as the snow intensifies. Stains could also indicate that your attic isn’t insulated properly, which will result in an increase in your heating bills during the colder months.

Replace Damaged Shingles

Damaged or missing shingles will lead to moisture leaking into your home in no time, especially during winter if you live in a snowy climate. It’s better to repair or replace your roof before winter begins, or you could face a far more expensive job once spring comes around. Water expands when it freezes, meaning that the changing temperatures throughout the day will widen any cracking or gapping in or around the shingles.

Snow Guard

Do you live in a climate that constantly gets snow? Then you might want to think about investing in a snow guard, as it both protects snow from falling onto people passing underneath your roofline and prevents shingles from being dislodged from rapid snow movement. A snow guard simple keeps snow in place when it’s thawing.

Properly Positioned Downspouts

Clean gutters will improve the movement of water from getting into the structure of your home, but that won’t mean a thing if your downspouts are positioned improperly. The purpose of a downspout is to divert water away from your home by being pointed in the opposite direction. If it’s pointed towards it, you’ll run the risk of water damaging the foundation of your house or flooding.
